U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh Welcomes Release of Kem Sokha

Phnom Penh, May 29, 2026 — The United States has welcomed the release of Cambodian opposition figure Kem Sokha, describing the development as a positive step for the country’s political and human rights landscape.

In a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, the United States reiterated that it has consistently called for Kem Sokha’s release, maintaining that his conviction—linked to allegations of U.S. involvement in efforts against the Cambodian government—was unfounded.

“The United States welcomes the news of Kem Sokha’s release,” the statement said, underscoring long-standing concerns over the case.

The Embassy further emphasized that the move represents progress, while encouraging the Cambodian government to continue strengthening democratic space. It called on authorities to ensure that all citizens are able to freely exercise their rights, particularly the freedoms of peaceful assembly and expression.

Kem Sokha, a prominent opposition leader, has been at the center of political tensions in Cambodia for several years, with his case closely watched by the international community.

The latest statement signals continued U.S. engagement on issues of political freedom and human rights in Cambodia.
