BANGKOK – May 27, 2026 – The launch of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's "Thai Chuay Thai Plus (60/40)" scheme has been met with frustration from elderly citizens, who struggled with facial recognition technology at ATMs and faced long queues and confusion during registration, according to a report by Thai Enquirer.
Many older Thais said the process was far too complicated and urged the government to replace it with a simpler system similar to existing senior welfare payments.
The technical difficulties came despite overwhelming public interest. Krungthai Bank reported that 22.63 million people attempted to register between 6:00 AM and noon on the first day, with 17.37 million completing the process successfully. However, bank branches across the country were flooded with elderly residents seeking help with identity verification, facial recognition, and phone number issues.
A survey by RealWatch Lab found that 69% of social media posts about the first day of registration reported success through the Paotang app, while 31% highlighted problems including app crashes, slow performance, and registration difficulties.
