SIEM REAP – May 29, 2026 – Doctors at Siem Reap Provincial Referral Hospital have successfully removed a live 60mm mortar shell, identified as originating from Thai military forces, from a woman's chest after a landmine explosion while she was clearing land for farming in Oddar Meanchey province.

The victim, a young woman, was admitted to the hospital on May 27. She had been injured when a wartime explosive detonated as she and others were burning vegetation to clear farmland. In a remarkable twist of fate, a 60mm shell from the same blast lodged into her back and penetrated her chest — but did not explode.

When the victim arrived at Siem Reap hospital, the medical team performed a high-risk surgery with extreme care and precision. The operation successfully removed the live shell from her body. After the surgery, a CMAC team confirmed the shell was live and unexploded — a "one in a million" stroke of luck.
The Siem Reap Provincial Administration expressed deep admiration and gratitude to the entire medical team for their dedicated and successful efforts. Officials also extended their best wishes for the victim's full recovery.
