KOH SAMUI – May 28, 2026 – Tourist brochures still call Koh Samui a tropical paradise. But for one family, the island has become a nightmare, according to a report by the Bangkok Post.
Sikkharin Phromcharoen, 31, a volunteer taxi driver known for giving free rides to pregnant women, the elderly, the disabled, and the poor, was beaten and shot dead on May 24. His alleged killers are rivals linked to mafia-style gangs controlling illegal black-plate taxi operations.
The trigger was simple: Sikkharin parked in a passenger pick-up zone claimed by drivers backed by powerful networks. A local mediator thought the dispute was resolved. Days later, he was dead.
The killing has stripped away the island's glossy facade, revealing a dangerous environment where ordinary people live in fear. His wife, Onchuma, fled with more than 10 relatives, begging for witness protection from the Ministry of Justice. "We don't feel safe anywhere," she said. Strangers contacted family members after the attack, deepening their terror.
Local residents refuse to talk, the Bangkok Post reported. Police first claimed security cameras were too blurry to identify anyone. Only after a foreign tourist handed over a clearer video did authorities make an arrest. One suspect is in custody. Others remain at large.
