"Green Gold": Tourism Minister Applauds India-Cambodia Digital Payment Link as Game Changer

PHNOM PENH – June 3, 2026 – Cambodia's tourism sector has received a major boost with the launch of the cross-border UPI/QR payment system between Cambodia and India, an initiative that Minister of Tourism H.E. Huot Hak hailed as a transformative step for digital integration and tourism facilitation.
Speaking at the launch ceremony on June 2, organized by the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh, the Minister commended the collaborative efforts of the Indian Embassy, the National Bank of Cambodia, and other stakeholders in bringing the system to fruition. The event was attended by Indian Ambassador H.E. Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, along with senior officials, banking leaders, and private sector representatives.
Minister Huot Hak emphasized that the digital payment link is more than just a technological achievement — it is a bridge connecting the people, businesses, and tourists of both nations, making cross-border financial transactions seamless, secure, and efficient.
The initiative aligns with the Royal Government's vision under Prime Minister Hun Manet to drive digital transformation and position tourism as a modern, resilient, and competitive sector — what Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen has famously called "green gold."
The Minister expressed strong support for the system, noting that it will enhance the travel experience for Indian visitors, support local tourism businesses, and foster a more connected digital economy. He also highlighted the potential for increased Indian tourist arrivals, which reached approximately 22,000 in the first quarter of 2026, with expectations of further growth through enhanced connectivity and upcoming international events in Cambodia.
