PHNOM PENH – June 5, 2026 – Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Cambodia's environmental protection efforts and improving local community livelihoods through waste management and green economy projects, following a meeting between German officials and the Cambodian Minister of Environment.

The German delegation, led by Christof Weigelmeier, Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy in Cambodia, and Dr. Matthias Bickel, Country Director of GIZ, met with H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, on June 4 at the Ministry of Environment.

Weigelmeier confirmed Germany's continued support, particularly through GIZ, for projects on waste management, solid waste reduction and recycling, plastic waste management, and conservation of the Koh Sralau area in Koh Kong province, which focuses on improving local community livelihoods and preserving biodiversity.
Germany has been cooperating with the Royal Government of Cambodia to implement activities centered on the third National Contribution Plan to address climate change (NDC 3.0), aiming to help manage waste and plastic, and build climate-resilient and prosperous local communities.

Minister Eang Sophalleth noted that Cambodia was ranked as the country with the world's best natural environment by U.S. News & World Report. He emphasized that the Ministry of Environment is working on environmental protection and natural resource management based on three pillars: cleanliness, green growth, and sustainability.

The Minister also stressed that the Royal Government places great importance on local community livelihoods, as conservation cannot succeed without employment and income for citizens. The Ministry is also promoting green tourism destination projects in protected areas to attract tourists and generate direct income for local communities.
