BANGKOK – May 26, 2026 – A former Formula 1 driver is recovering in Bangkok after being slashed by a moped rider while crossing a city street, according to a report by Motorsport Week.

Mika Salo, 59, who once substituted for an injured Michael Schumacher at Ferrari, told Finnish publication Ilta-Sanomat that doctors had to stitch both muscle and skin layers. "There are 28 stitches in total," he said.
Salo noted that he was aware of other similar attacks occurring on the same day. "Luckily this one hit my leg and not anything else," he added.

Hospital staff later informed Salo that several other individuals had been treated for comparable slash wounds that evening and into the night. Some accounts suggest the injuries occurred near his hotel, indicating the attacks may not be isolated.
"If this was intentional, they only tried to injure me," Salo was quoted as saying. He added that the consequences could have been far more serious had the blade struck elsewhere.
Thai police have not released any statement confirming whether the cases are connected or if a suspect has been identified.

Salo continues to recover in Bangkok, returning to the hospital regularly for wound care and dressing changes while taking antibiotics. He praised the medical professionals in Thailand, describing them as efficient and highly professional.
Salo raced in Formula One from 1994 to 2002, representing teams such as Lotus, Tyrrell, Arrows, BAR, Ferrari, Sauber, and Toyota.
