Cambodian Senate Fully Supports Compulsory Conciliation to Resolve Maritime Dispute with Thailand

PHNOM PENH – June 2, 2026 – The Cambodian Senate has expressed its full support for the Royal Government's decision to invoke compulsory conciliation under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to resolve the overlapping maritime claims with Thailand, following Thailand's withdrawal from the 2001 Memorandum of Understanding.
According to an official statement posted on the Facebook page of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Acting Head of State and President of the Senate, the Senate believes that this legal step demonstrates Cambodia's good faith and high responsibility in pursuing a peaceful and just solution before the international community, after bilateral frameworks for resolving the dispute had been exhausted.
The Senate expressed confidence that the compulsory conciliation mechanism will contribute to creating favorable conditions for a fair, transparent, and sustainable resolution, aimed at maintaining peace, stability, and regional cooperation for the mutual benefit of the peoples of both countries.
The Senate also voiced strong hope that Thailand will engage in this mechanism, which promotes peaceful dialogue in accordance with international law to resolve the overlapping maritime claims.
Additionally, the Senate called on all Cambodians to maintain national unity, trust in the government's leadership and actions, and support all efforts to protect Cambodia's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and legal rights based on international law, peaceful means, and cooperation.
The Senate reaffirmed that respect for the rule of law, good neighborly policies, and peaceful dispute resolution remain the most reliable path toward lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
