PHNOM PENH – May 20, 2026 – Cambodia today solemnly marks the 9th National Day of Remembrance, a day dedicated to honoring the memory of millions who perished under the Democratic Kampuchea regime and restoring dignity to all victims.
The annual observance serves to pay tribute to the spirits of those who lost their lives between 1975 and 1979, as well as to honor the survivors who endured unimaginable suffering. The regime was responsible for crimes against humanity, war crimes, and genocide.
The ceremony featured a performance by an artistic team that depicted scenes from the brutal Khmer Rouge regime, followed by the search for peace and the eventual return to peace and stability. The performance served as a powerful reminder of the nation's painful past and its hard-won peace.
The National Day of Remembrance is a time for Cambodians to collectively remember the tragic chapter of their history, make merit for the deceased, and reaffirm their commitment to ensuring such atrocities never happen again. It also focuses on restoring the honor and dignity of all victims, whether living or deceased.
