Australia Backs Regional Counter-Proliferation Training in Phnom Penh

Australia Backs Regional Counter-Proliferation Training in Phnom Penh
PHNOM PENH, June 17, 2026 – Australia has lent its support to a regional training initiative in Phnom Penh aimed at strengthening national and cross-border efforts to detect, intercept, and investigate the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

The training programme, delivered last week with backing from the Australian Border Force, was jointly led by US Customs and Border Protection and Export Control and Related Border Security. Hosted at Cambodia's Customs National School, the sessions brought together officials from Cambodia's National Authority of Chemical Weapons, the National Police, and the General Department of Customs and Excise, alongside their counterparts from Laos and Vietnam.

Participants were equipped with practical skills in risk identification, concealment detection, and intelligence utilisation. Australian expertise in addressing this shared security challenge was also shared throughout the training. The initiative underscores Australia's continued commitment to helping Cambodia and its neighbours strengthen border security and regional cooperation.
