A Market of Hope: Cambodia Helps Displaced Families Trade Again

BANTEAY MEANCHEY – June 2, 2026 – More than 2,800 Cambodian families uprooted by the Thai invasion are getting a fresh start. The Royal Government has opened a temporary market in Svay Chek district, Banteay Meanchey province, to help displaced residents regain their economic footing.
The facility was inaugurated on Sunday by H.E. Kitti Sangahapundit Kun Kim, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM), at a temporary housing community managed by the Cambodia Veterans Association. The initiative follows Prime Minister Hun Manet's directive to ensure "no citizen is left behind."
Before the market opened, displaced families sold goods from their makeshift shelters, battling rain, wind, and unpredictable income. Now, they have a centralized, clean, and organized space to trade.
BANTEAY MEANCHEY – June 2, 2026 – The Royal Government has opened a temporary market in Svay Chek district to help more than 2,800 families displaced by the Thai invasion rebuild their livelihoods.
"This temporary market is part of the Royal Government's strategic plan to gradually restore livelihoods," H.E. Kun Kim said. "We aim to provide not just shelter, but sustainable daily income opportunities."
Vendor Sok Ny shared her relief: "We used to sell around our houses, which was very difficult during rain and wind. Having a designated market gives us encouragement and makes it easier to earn steady income."
H.E. Kun Kim encouraged vendors and reaffirmed that government financial aid will continue as families adapt to their new circumstances. The market is a testament to Cambodia's commitment to restoring not just homes, but hope.
